HOLY COW! The first place, playoff-bound Cubs crushed the White Sox 10-0 on Friday night on the South Side behind a dominant start by Yu Darvish (7 IP, 0 ER, 5 K) and two home runs and an epic bat flip from Willson Contreras.

Darvish lowered his season ERA to 2.01 in the effort, bolstering his Cy Young Award candidacy with his NL-best 8th win of the season. On the offensive side, Schwarber, Baez, and Caratini also homered as the offense put on a show.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals split a doubleheader with the Brewers while the Reds clinched a playoff berth by beating the Twins.

The series continues at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday. 58 games down, 2 to go.

GO CUBS GO!

I'm so confused. The lead is 3 games. There are 2 left. Why is the lead down to 1??

Because rationally the cards still have a double header with detroit on Monday that they can choose to play or not play giving certain scenarios

Cardinals missed so many games due to COVID, they might end up only playing 58 games. Currently, they have only played 56 games, and will only play 59-60 depending on playoff positioning. So if Cubs get down to business tomorrow or Sunday the Cardinals may only play 58 regular season games

Yep. MLB has reserved the right to make STL & DET make up 1 or 2 of their missed games on Monday, depending on the NL playoff race. The CMN is based on the Cards playing a 60-game season, which is still possible.

But if the cubs lose two and the cards win four, they’re tied. The season series was a 5-5 split. Wouldn’t it go to division record next?

RFBleachers said...

It would. And if both teams finish 33-27 with a 5-5 season head-to-head record, their division records would be 22-18 (Cubs) and 23-17 (Cards).

That's why the CMN remains at 1. :)

Never mind. The division standings just updated. Magic number 1. Go cubs!

I have been checking this site for years. I haven't left a message in awhile, but with our beloved Cubs one win (or Cardinals loss) away from an NL CENTRAL CROWN, I am feeling nostalgic and hope all who frequent this old site are doing well. Go Cubs!!

Am I wrong for believing it has nothing to do with the Cards? Cubs drop 2 and Cin wins 2, they have the better win % 🤷🏻‍♂️

It has everything to do with the Cards.

The Reds can't catch the Cubs -- their best possible finish is 32 wins, and the Cubs' worst possible finish is 33 wins. The Reds have already been eliminated from the division title race.

The Cards, however, still can, since MLB will have them make up 1 or 2 of their postponed games vs. the Tigers on Monday if they'd have a potential impact for a top 4 seed in the NL playoff bracket.

If that happens, the Cards' best possible finish is 33 wins, with the Cubs' worst possible finish being 33 wins.

The first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, which was 5-5 this season.

Second tiebreaker is division W/L record. If the Cards reach 33 wins, they'd have 23 NL Central wins to the Cubs' 22 and would win the Central while bumping the Cubs to a Wild Card berth and a 5 seed in the NL playoffs.

But one Cubs win would put all of this to rest, earn a 3 seed, and secure home field advantage in the Wild Card round.
